Sun. 30 Oct. Spirits Invade Mambo Tribe's Sunday Social
Who Was What?!
Halloween continued at Mambo Tribe's latest Dovercourt Centre Sunday Social as more spirits gathered to party. Imaginations ran wild and Wesley's Candy Machine took the cake. Shrek & Fiona brought a touch of green to Halloween's orange. Sexy femme fatales, rabbits, surfer dudes, construction workers, hippies, cats, a dominatrix, and peacock spirits came out to celebrate.
DJ MAS spun tunes and Paul 'Sweet Pea' Chivers was the guest DJ.
Dancing started around 6:30pm and continued after several dance troupes entertained and delighted the gathered Halloween Spirits.
Dancing or showing off some great moves is one thing. Preparing for a show and performing is another. Mambo Tribe is becoming very active in encouraging people of all ages and abilities to take their salsa a step further, and perform in front of a live audience.
One can learn more about salsa, or any other dance for that matter, when one has to work with a group, pick apart music, apply moves, patterns and combinations to it; make it flow and tell a story; learn as a group to execute it again and again - all in the space of six weeks! Wow! Eventual a critical mass of salsa performers will hit and Toronto may become a household name in the global salsa scene.
Mambo Tribe's intermediate student group put on a very promising ensemble display. Some prisoners tried to make their salsa escape, but were re-captured, and United Salseros, including Rene Delgado, reprised their 2005 Canada Salsa Congress Saturday Night Cuban fiesta show. The surprise show was a group of "Night of the Living Dead" refugees shocking the other spirits with their take on Michael Jackson's "Thriller."
Choosing a winning spirit's costume was difficult with so many to choose from, but in the end, it was the handmade Candy Machine and Shrek & Fiona who caught the spirits' fancy.
