2005 Congress Notebook

Thurs. 13 Oct. Toronto's Latin Energy's Oscar & Vanessa featured in 22 Sep. 2005 Royal Gazette, a Bermuda newspaper! Picture in right column below!

Mon. 10 Oct. Pix & stories to come.

Sun. 9 Oct. So much to see and do... new turn patterns, workshops, friends drom all over, baubles to tempt the pocketbook.. so little time.. can only be in one place. 1100 seats, plus hundreds standing, filled the performance venue. Dancing til dawn.

"If you're not there, cheat." Juan Calderon as he explained the next piece of his turn pattern. The crinkling, crackling sound of people unfolding their Congress flyers - Which workshop next - Which workshop next.

Ralph Irizarry had a fabulous time playing the Congress. He enjoyed the thousands of people dancing - the dancing room plus the performance room were combined to handle the multitudes.

Sat. 8 Oct. The higher stage - 4 feet - rocks! Easier to see the performances! Extra seating a hit. Dance floor larger than last year... Lots of room to move on the floor and around the floor. DJ Julio and DJ Nelson -- it moved. Pix to come. Bed time 2:30 am... Wake-up 9:30am... Sleep - Eat - Workshops trump pix. Gorette had boy 24 June 2005 on Quebec's Fete Nationale. And, she performed last nite. Post-Partum blues - hah! More to come. Salsa and Dave Brubeck's Take Five mix very well. Oscar & Vanessa take tango and salsa to new places too.

Congress goers are in for a treat with Ralph Irizarry tonight! Your feet will be on fire all night.

Toronto's DJ Billy Bryans spoke with Ralph Irizzary Thursday night. We are very lucky to have him, given the live latin scene in NYC today,

"Smoking a cigar outside of Lula's - Ralph Irizarry talked about latin music in New York City back in the 70's - when he broke in to the scene. In those days there were 15 bands and over 75 clubs, so if you were an in-demand salsa musician you would play as many as four gigs a day on the weekend. Play for an hour, move to the next club, play for another hour and so on.

Ralph says there are now only 3 clubs in NYC."

Dancers, support the live music in your city, even if you take in a live venue once or twice a year. Get out there to preserve your music. CDs come from live people. If the live people have no place to make music...
